Crowns/Veneers Q&A
What is a Crown?
Dental crowns are a dental installation covering an entire tooth with ceramic or porcelain. Crowns solve a variety of dental issues. These coverings create a natural look, as they are manufactured to match natural tooth enamel and can be used to restore decayed teeth or cover metal amalgam fillings. Crowns provide support and protection to teeth weakened by root canal therapy. They act as anchors when a dental bridge is needed.
Why Would a Person Get Veneers?
People get veneers to improve the appearance of their smiles. Veneers cover and fix discoloration, misshapen, chipped or broken teeth. Veneers are also sometimes used to correct misaligned, irregular or uneven teeth, or to close gaps between teeth. Veneers offer a variety of advantages including a natural appearance, minimal irritation of the gums, they are constructed from stain resistant porcelain and installation is minimally invasive.
What Should I Expect During Installation?
Crowns and veneers are usually installed over two or three visits to your dentist. In the first visit, your teeth will be examined and you and your dentist will discuss what you want to achieve and which treatment will best achieve those results. The dentist may take a mold of your teeth to act as a model for the fabrication of the crown or veneers. During the second visit, your teeth will be prepared for installation. This usually involves a thorough cleaning and polishing and removal of the tooth enamel. If the installations have not been completed, a temporary cover will be put into the mouth to protect your teeth. At your final visit, your dentist will fit your crowns and bridge onto your teeth. The dentist may need to make adjustments to the installation to ensure a proper fit, but you will go home with an improved smile.
Insurance
As a service to our patients, our practice accepts most dental insurance programs, including non-managed care, indemnity (traditional) and PPO out-of-network. We are not part of any managed care network. Our accounting staff will prepare all the necessary forms for your dental benefits. However, we remind you that your specific policy is an agreement between you and your insurance company. Please keep in mind that you are responsible for your total obligation should your insurance benefits result in less coverage than anticipated. Our staff will gladly submit a pre-treatment estimate to your insurance company so that you will know what your benefits will be. The fees charged for services rendered to those who are insured are the usual and customary fees charged to all our patients for similar services. Your policy may base its allowances on a fixed fee schedule, which may or may not coincide with our usual fees. You should be aware that different insurance companies vary greatly in the types of coverage available. Also, some companies take care of claims promptly while others delay payment for several months.
